In fifth grade we start off the year with Health. During these 8 chapters, we talk about many topics, including body systems, the "Food Plate", taking care of our bodies, fitness, and making good choices in regards to drugs and alcohol. Several times we try to bring in speakers to make the topics real. The students also do research, and create projects for display. Hopefully, all this leads to living long, healthy lives!
Our second major focus is Lake Ecology, which ties in many of the State Science Standards. We begin our Minnesota Lake Ecology unit in March. We study fresh water lakes and streams, water properties, the water cycle, food chains, pollution, native/non-native and invasive species, and to how to classify lakes and test water qualities. In May, we attend the Fresh Water Fair at the Pine County Fairgrounds. We also take a trip to see the Duluth Aquarium and observe first hand several aquatic habitats, and many varieties of creatures. It is a wonderful chance to bring what we have learned in Lake Ecology up close and hands on!
